Default The brush has been moved - now the mower is bad, post 4

All that brush I cut last weekend had finally been hauled behind the barn. I'm drenched. I came in to rehydrate and cool off. Next up - mow. With the riding mower. It has a headlight and moves faster than a mosquito can fly. I'll do the trim with the walk-behind mower tomorrow morning. If I start after 9am the church-goers will be at church and the rest of the neighbors will understand that I'm mowing to beat the heat and they won't mind.

No, I didn't see Chuckles. Its so blasted hot out there he's probably deep in his burrow. Or maybe, if I'm lucky, he has moved and is now destroying someone else's yard.

The big mower has a belt problem. I think its just jumped off the pulley, but it could be broken. Its in the barn. Tomorrow I'll bring it up to the house, jack it up with the jack from my car, and look under it. Then either fix it and finish mowing or put "call mower repair shop" on Monday's to do list.

The problem happened when I mowed too close to a tree stump. My neighbor has drilled holes in his stumps to make them rot faster. I think I'll do the same this fall.

BTW - I found several small air holes I think belong to Chuckles. But there's no telling how long they've been there.

I think there was a "breaking news" report of a large rodent laughing hysterically in Nebraska a little while ago.

I tore up 2 mowers in 1 day while DH was deployed. I hope it is just off the pulley.
Take it as a sign that it is too hot to mow!

Air hole in the stumps. Never heard of that one might try it myself. We finally got rain so i guess we will have to mow. Kyle has mowed 1 time this year!
Good luck with your mower hope that the belt has just jumped. Ours used to do that and come to find out someone (Kyle) hit a big piece of wood out by our wood pile. Had to put the pulley back in line and everything was good after that. Thank God one of our best friends is a very good mower repair man.

Sure, it lets in air. But the hole is to let in water and bacteria and mold spores and insects, all the things that make wood rot.

I have a drill and several hundred feet of extenison cord. The way I see it the worst that can happen is that it doesn't work.

Thanks for the info. Makes sense when you think about it. My Gram told me to pour salt into the middle of it. The whole center is gone due to carpenter ants. Had to have the huge oak tree cut down. I cried. It had to be over 100 yrs old. If a big storm would have come through here it would have ended up in my kitchen!

Drop some powdered milk or stump rot in those holes to make it rot faster.

Buttermilk is your friend there as well, to introduce the wee beasties.
