It's still illegal to brew it in Alabama. Wine is legal though for some reason.

It was illegal when we lived in Arkansas. I guess there are still a few holdout states. Some states have a limit on how much you can brew in a year. Missouri has no limits on brewing, just distribution.

Not illegal here. DS makes his own beer from time to time. Quite tasty!

Not as a hobby. But the process is exactly the same as the process we use to grow vaccines at work.

Late DH tried home brewing 30 years ago. Decided the results were good, but not worth the effort.

He should look into it again if he likes a good beer. There are many new options that make the process much simpler. Kits etc. I can mix up a batch in about 20 minutes, let it ferment for week or two and bottle in in half an hour, including clean up time. End up with 50 bottles of excellent beer for about $.50 a bottle.
