Southern Soul
Who knows more about Southern cooking than Paula Deen? No one, expect maybe her good friend Miss Carol Fay Ellison. They start off their banquet of Southern soul with a Peach Glazed Country Ham with a Peach Corn Relish that is out of this world. Then to add a bit of decadence to the meal, it's a Southern Buttermilk Biscuit and Blue Cheese Bread Pudding. And what Southern meal would be complete without a Loveless Pecan Pie? Now that is some Southern cooking love!

Carol Fay Ellison, the beloved Biscuit Lady of Loveless Cafe fame, passed away in April, but two events this week are keeping her memory alive.
Ellison will make her final television appearance this Saturday, July 24, when Best Dishes with Paula Deen premieres at 10:30 a.m. on Food Network.

The Loveless says Ellison and Deen recorded the episode in November at the Deen residence in Savannah, Ga. It repeats on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and Monday at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. It was the last of many TV appearances Ellison made over the years.

Meanwhile, earlier this week the owners of the Loveless announced an award fund in Ellison's name. "Awards will be made to one or more individuals who embody the spirit with which Carol Fay worked her way up from a dishwasher at age 14 to become the national spokesperson for The Loveless Cafe," the company said in a release Wednesday.

Loveless Cafe owners Chuck and Trisha Elcan and Tom Morales created The Carol Fay Ellison “The Biscuit Lady” Award Fund in partnership with The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

The fund will give annual awards "to help people overcome an obstacle in their lives, and enable them to move to the next step," according to the Loveless website. Initially, only Loveless employees are eligible, but nominations will be open to anyone after 2012, the release said.

The Loveless Cafe dates back almost 60 years, and Ellison started work there in 1979. When Morales and other investors bought it in 2003, they recruited the veteran cook and biscuit maker as spokeswoman for the company. Ellison became a popular guest on shows like Late Night with Conan O’Brien and appeared many times on the Food Network, including a biscuit throwdown with Bobby Flay.

Hearing these two Carol Fay related news nuggets this week, I just kept thinking about one of the sweeter entries in this year's "You Are So Nashville If ..." contest in the Scene, attributed to Peter Dinkel:

"You are so Nashville if when you heard that the Biscuit Lady had died, you took solace in the thought that some day she would probably rise again."

Oh, how sad. I wonder what happened. She said this morning on the show that she was looking for a boyfriend (or something like that).

Reading around I found she died April 5 after being in the hospital for 3 1/2 weeks. She was 48 and is survived by a daughter and two grandsons.

I searched and searched and couldn't find anything about "why" she passed away. Really strange that they would want to keep it a secret.

I couldn't find a cause of death either. Sometimes people just don't want it known.
