Sunday Talk Show Tip Sheet 09/06/09
Amid the hubbub over President Barack Obama’s back-to-school speech on Tuesday, which some conservatives claim is an attempt to “indoctrinate students,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan makes his Sunday show debut on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” CNN’s “State of the Union” will air live from the Minnesota State Fair with Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who blasted the school speech as “uninvited,” and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.). Elsewhere, health care reform takes center stage ahead of the president’s address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, with White House senior adviser David Axelrod on “Meet the Press.” Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a Republican who’s been flirting with a run for governor, Former Rep. Sunday Talk Show Tip Sheet 09/27/09
It's an intra-Clinton ratings battle Sunday on the talk shows, as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, take to the airwaves for separate appearances. Secretary Clinton, fresh off her stop at the United Nations, is on CBS's "Face the Nation," along with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). On NBC, former President Clinton takes to "Meet the Press" to discuss his annual Global Initiative conference. Also on "Meet" are New York Gov. David Paterson, who'll respond to last week's reports that President Barack Obama asked him not to run for reelection, and Sens. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and Jim Webb (D-Va.). Defense Secretary Robert Gates appears on ABC's "This Week" and CNN's"State of the Union" to discuss Afghanistan, Iran and missile defense. On Iran and its desire to develop nuclear weapons, Gates warns that "there's no military option that does anything more than buy time," according to an advance excerpt from his taped CNN appearance. "The estimates are one to three years or so," he told CNN. "The only way you end up not having a nuclear-capable Iran is for the Iranian government to decide that their security is diminished by having those weapons, as opposed to strengthened. And so I think, as I say, while you don't take options off the table, I think there's still room left for diplomacy." ABC also hosts Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), while CNN features Sens. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) and Bob Corker (R-Tenn.). Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell stops by "Fox News Sunday," as polls shows his lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds shrinking. Also appearing are Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Kit Bond (R-Mo.), the chairwoman and vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.. On C-SPAN, the ranking Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Spencer Bachus of Alabama, is on C-SPAN's "Newsmakers" to field questions from Bloomberg's Alison Fitzgerald and the Washington Times' Sean Lengell. On Bloomberg TV, "Political Capital" hosts Center for American Progress President John Podesta, who headed Obama's presidential transition team, to discuss health care and the budget deficit. Still making headlines after his 96-minute U.N. screed, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi appears on CNN's "GPS 360" with Fareed Zakaria. And there's a new show, with Vice President Joe Biden as the first guest on TV One's "Washington Watch with Roland Martin," an hour-long public affairs show, which will also host House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.).

David And Susan Axelrod Fight For Epilepsy
Most Americans know David Axelrod as a senior political adviser to President Obama. But this Sunday, David and his wife Susan will join Katie Couric on CBS's 60 Minutes to discuss his other role -- as concerned parents of a daughter with epilepsy. "At first we thought it would be a passing thing; we never realized these seizures would define her whole life," David Axelrod has said. They aren't alone. Epilepsy impacts up to three million Americans of all ages; more than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and Parkinson's disease combined. Federal and private dollars invested in epilepsy research pale in comparison to those spent on other diseases. Continuation of Article

Sunday Talk Show Tip Sheet
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the marquee guest on this Sunday’s television talk shows, where the hot topic will be the Obama administration's decision to send the self-proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, to New York for trial. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who built his unsuccessful bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination on his post-Sept. 11 performance eight years ago, will make three separate appearances. ABC’s“This Week” has both Clinton and Giuliani, who blasted the administration's move Friday as proof “we have regressed to a pre-9/11 mentality with respect to Islamic extremist terrorism.” Clinton also headlines NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where she’ll be followed by an education discussion with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) and the Rev. Al Sharpton. Giuliani also appears on CNN’s“State of the Union,” as do senior White House adviser David Axelrod, who's traveling with President Barack Obama on his nine-day Asia trip; Sens. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) and Judd Gregg (R-N.H.); and Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat. Gregg, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, will be interviewed as well on C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers.” The former mayor, who’s reportedly flirting with a bid for New York governor, also takes to“Fox News Sunday,” along with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.). CBS’s “Face the Nation” hosts Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, and Vermont Sen. Pat Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Bloomberg’s “Political Capital” hosts Anita Dunn, who's stepping down as White House communications director, and White House Budget Director Peter Orszag. Dunn, interviewed Friday by Bloomberg’s Al Hunt as part of its Washington Summit at the Newseum, said the White House’s fight with Fox News had discouraged other TV networks from following its lead. “It did help people get a sense of perspective again,” Dunn said. “People took a step back and said, ‘Hmm, am I really wanting to go chase those stories?’ ” Finally, TV One’s “Washington Watch” interviews Rep. Walters to guest anchor 'This Week'; Ailes on Panel
As ABC decides who'll replace George Stephanopoulos on "This Week," the network plans to switch things up a bit next week. Instead of rotating internal candidates Jake Tapper and Terry Moran -- who hosted today -- ABC has tapped Barbara Walters to guest anchor next Sunday's show. Walters last hosted "This Week" in August 1990, when the biggest topic in the news was Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Regardless of what the top political story is Sunday, Walters will have an interesting panel, with guests Arianna Huffington, Paul Krugman, George Will, and Fox News chairman Roger Ailes. Over the past year, both Stephanopoulos and Rick Klein, of ABC's "The Note," have appeared on Fox News. But it's still surprising to see the head of Fox sitting down on the network's Sunday show. Sunday Talk Show Tip Sheet 5/2/10
The huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and Arizona’s stringent new immigration law dominate this Sunday’s television talk shows, with the White House dispatching Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to ABC’s “This Week,” “Fox News Sunday,” CNN’s “State of the Union” and NBC’s“Meet the Press.” ABC will also have Lamar McKay, chairman and president of BP America - the energy company that hired the offshore oil rig that exploded in the Gulf, spilling thousands barrels of oil a day. And CNN has Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, the newly minted independent Senate candidate, and his Republican rival, Marco Rubio, to talk about their spirited campaign. In his pre-taped interview, Crist defends his decision to drop out of the Republican Senate primary, where Rubio had surged to a double-digit lead, and shrugged off GOP criticism of the move. “That’s what parties do and that’s part of the biggest problem. All people will do is, all they’re going to do is attack each other all day long. People like this, they go home and watch cable television, watch broadcast television, and they see those kinds of arguments and it breaks their hearts. They see bickering, and they see nobody standing up and saying, ‘We’re all Americans. We’ve gotta to work together,' ” Crist said in advance excerpts. Rubio, the former Florida state House speaker, will also appear on Fox, while Crist stops by NBC. Other NBC guests include Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D-Mich.), Gov. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.) and Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.). CBS’s “Face the Nation” has Reps. Charlie Melancon (D-La.) and Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, who's challenging Sen. John McCain for the Arizona Republican Senate nomination. CNN’s“Fareed Zakaria GPS” has Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, who's sure to talk about the Securities and Exchange Commission investigation of his company and the recent grilling its executives took on Capitol Hill. TV One’s “Washington Watch” talks to White House economic adviser Austan Goolsbee and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.). Bloomberg TV’s “Political Capital” talks to Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) about financial regulation. And, finally, C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” hosts Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), a member of the Senate Banking Committee who'll take questions from The Washington Post’s Brady Dennis and The Wall Street Journal’s Damian Paletta.
