Default what's this lump on my knuckle??

Last night I noticed a round lump on the top of my knuckle. It feels hard like a bone but it's round on the top. When I bend my finger, it sticks up 3/8th of an inch and is about that wide. And it hurts when I push on it.

I don't remember hurting it but we have been tiling and I've been doing all the grouting and pushing alot with that finger.

Any idea what it might be? I hate to run to the doc for one little bump.

I don't know, but i've had a bump like that on my index finger for a long time. It isn't sore, though. It definitely isn't growing, and I think it's some kind of a callus.

It's my index finger. Not the joint next to the nail but the next one up - is it a knuckle?

I'm wondering if it might be arthritis.

I'd go with ganglion cyst. Get a big heavy book and slam it on there to make it pop! That's what I've always heard.

I had a ganglion cyst not too long ago and it popped on its own. I think I hit it on something because it was there one minute and gone later on.

I have had several ganglion cysts. The one popped on it's own. The other two I was able to pop...I had to press very very hard.

I had gone to the doc over the first one, and he attempted to drain it with a needle, and even tried to pop it, but he could not. After about a week, I was able to push on it really hard and break it.

The next one, again, it took some time, but finally I was able to break it...and the last one just went away on it's own.

My first thought was a cyst, my second thought was a bone spur. Though I don't know if you can get those on your knuckles? I guess I wouldnt see why not.

I had a ganglion on my wrist when I was in college and my dh (bf at the time) hit it with a book and it was gone. I got another one years later but neither one hurt like this thing does. I think the ganglion moved around and this one doesn't.

Almost All my finger joints have knots on them, and they are very painful in the winter, especially, or when I scrape one. This is arthritis; I believe they are called "Hebron's nodes." (Now, where did THAT come from?!)

I have a good sized GS on the outside of my left wrist. Causes pain in the palm of my hand and lots of pain if it twist as I pick something up or put something down.

I didn't realize it was there until I picked up my iron skillet one day and dropped it because the pain was so bad.

Somedays it hurts bad and somedays it is just bothersome.

It needs drained but I hate to do that.

My first thought was ganglion cyst as well, although they are more common on wrists than fingers.

It could be a bone spur, I have one of those on the index finger of my right hand where a pen would sit while writing.

RA causes bumps on joints, but you would know if you had RA long before the first bump shows up.

I would treat it as a ganglion and, if that doesn't take care of it, have your doctor take a look at it.

I'm going to appoligize in advance for bringing up an old thread. Bad form I hear. But I came across this by accident and was curious. Did you ever find out what the lump was? My DD has one on the side of her knuckle.....kinda in between knuckles. It's very painful and at times it's hard for her to hold things. I'm worried.

I would also go with the cyst and my brother had several removed off fingers over the years.

Ugh, no! I have them on several joints (right where you're describing them). I had two surgically removed and now have two others. The sports orthopedist called them arthritis cysts.

Texas Dreamer, until I saw your post, I didn't realize this was an old thread.

From the other replies, It seems they are also thinking this still applies to compozer's original thread in 2008.

It's less confusing to start a new thread, rather than pick up an old one.

Here's a great group of photos that identify hand cysts/lumps.

Forgot all about posting this. It is still there and I seem to have enough other issues to talk to my doc about especially after seeing those pictures - it is nothing compared to some of them. I am full of arthritis and think mine looks more like herberden's nodes. Thanks fro asking TexasDreamer.

That's what some of my fingers look like. I do have a ganglian cyst on the inside of my wrist. I would never have the nerve to try and break it. It really doesn't bother me much, but my finger joints do hurt when I over use them.

OMG hahahaha
BTW my ganglions are never on the joint, but rather near tendons on the top of my hand.
