Default ADDED COUNTERTOP PICS--Need input on bathroom vanity size--see pic

I've been looking into a bathroom vanity instead of the current pedistal--

I can get an 30in x 18in with top for really cheap--but I dont get my choice of top--it's cultured marble.

I am after more countertop space--I can go up to a 21 inch deep cabinet but I will have to purchase a countertop seperately--and for what I want, the cost will be quite more.

I'm leaning toward the deeper vanity--The current sink top is 18 inches deep so a 22in top would be 3 inches deeper ending about where the round part on the top of the towel ring-

Do you think it would take up too much of that wall space only leaving a couple inches?

I think it would look good, but you'd have to move your towel holder.

I don't think I have any pictures, but I have a cabinet at the cabin that goes pretty much to the door moulding. I think it looks ok. You can never have too much bathroom counter space.

I'm feeling really good about going larger depth wise--

What do you think of these prices for a countertop? Lowes a white carrera mable top with backspash for $198. or a granite one for about the same--I'm leaning towards the white carrera...Do you think is a reasonable price?

I'm changing a vanity here within the month also.

I"m just starting to get prices and I'm not sure what I'm going to do either. I'm always looking for the maximum impact with the lowest price, which usually involves quite a bit of research.

I know I'm going with a white top, and probably a white vanity.

I'm also changing out a few things, light fixtures, towel holder, tp holder...just to freshen things up a bit.

I really can't see you finding the counter you want for much less. You're lucky, you can go with something "stock". I'm limited in the width because I have a tiled wall on each side, so I either have to order something custom, or have someone cut it down about an inch.

Decisions, decisions...

Our countertop is deep too... almost to the door facing. When we put it in, we cut the backsplash off (it's just a basic laminate... was about $80-90 for an 8' length), which shortened it a bit, but it's still fairly deep. If you were okay with a basic countertop vs a solid surface, you could possibly get the countertop and cabinet for about the price you're looking at for just the countertop. Even if you got a higher grade laminate, you'd likely save money. They have some really pretty ones now that mimic the solid surface ones. (*"*)

Bug-my only issue is that I'm trying to get this to be as easily installed without a bunch of other labor that I would need to pay for...with the more expensive coutertop, the sink is already attached so I would be just a matter of putting in the cabinet, attaching the top and faucet and hooking up the water.

Yeah... that makes sense. I've gotten too used to having a helpmate with stuff. I'd have had trouble doing a countertop and sinks without Joe.

Funnily enough, when we redid our bathroom, I really wanted pedastal sinks, but after really thinking about it space-wise and storage-wise, and the fact that we've got some quirky plumbing, keeping the cabinet and just upgrading the sinks with a new countertop... You're going to love the extra space! (*"*)

$198 for a vanity WITH top and sink? Snap it up! And I think it will look fine butted up against the two walls. You can mount the towel holder to the side of the vanity. And I like the marble.

Great price! I dont think the new vanity would take up too much of the wall space.

I'm a little late posting, but I couldn't find my camera....

Wanted to show you the vanity in our bathroom..... (we're getting ready to wallpaper, so it's pretty blah).

I measured and it's 22 inches and the wall is a smidge over 24 inches. I like the extra depth and the look..... PLUS more storage underneath and on top.

Hope this helps.

The vanity in the kids' bathroom comes almost to the door facing. I think they look fine like that- it's fairly standard, I think. The extra storage space is definately a bigger advantage to us than a couple of extra inches of floor space.

Thanks for the pictures Wallis/Tie...Now I have another question/issue...

Seeing that both of your countertops are attached to the wall, do you have a gap under the countertop between the side of cabinet and wall...

The countertops are 1 inch larger the the cabinets..so you have a half inch overhang on each side...so if a 31 inch countertop is all the way against the wall and you push the cabinet against the wall, then you have a 1 inch over hang on the right side of the cabinet.

or you center it, half inch overhang on each side of cabinet but the cabinet is not butted against the wall, leaving a gap.

Of what I have seen at Lowes and Home Depot, I'm leaning towards this cabinet...and then white carrera marble at lowes--Lowes also has this black granite and a beigey/gold granite.

You're really doing your homework...... I just checked in all 3 of our baths.......

In each one, the cabinet and counter are "butted" up to the wall on the left side........ There is an overhang of 1.5" on the right side - which looks fine. (It's funny how it works out - in each bathroom, the toilet is to the right of the vanity - and we have the paper holder mounted on that side of the cabinet.)

Let me know if you'd like a photo - Heck.... I'll go take a photo now anyway.....

I'm one that likes color/dimension in rooms AND I don't worry about darker colors in smaller rooms...... SO..... I'd choose something with color (not white) and give you room so pop with the countertop and then towels and/or accessories.

Can't wait to see your finished room..... bet you're excited !!!

about 9 yrs ago bought a granite top from Home Depot and had it cut by a professional. I just set it down on my old vanity. Everything was perfect, but the people who cut hole put on side and I wanted in middle. OMG!!! They let me chose from their stock. I was so upset, had dark green - so disgustedly picked this white grey black speckled. I have learned to live with it. Better than those mexican tiles.

It reminds me of your bathroom - small. In your first photo saw oval mirror, then a square in second photo. I just put in a wall mount oval medicine cabinet from Lowe's. I noticed yours because it was a big decision also.

I like the white because it makes the room seem larger. Can't wait to see what you chose!

do your research on carrera marble. it is beautiful but it also can easily stain and it will lose its shine over time- you will probably have to seal it once or twice a year.

for a bathroom and kids the granite, either colour, really is a better choice.

I would go with one of the granite tops. As pippee said, carrera marble is very high maintenance and really, somewhat fragile when it comes to stains. You would have to seal it a couple of times a year to keep the shine. In a small space where accidents can happen, and with a couple of kids, I would definitely go with the granite.

wow-that is really disappointing to hear about the marble-I googled and one person even had stains just from a soap bottle dispenser...

Thanks wallis--I see your countertop has the built in sink--That is nice too for cleaning purposes. Is that from a place like Home Depot/Lowes or somewhere else?

Wallis,

Your counter looks like exactly what I have at our cabin. Unfortunately, I never bought that left filler piece......and the company has gone out of business. I'm still trying to decide what to do. I'm leaning towards cutting a piece of wood, painting it, and sealing it with a glossy finish.

I bought my counter top about 10 years ago, probably at Home Depot.

When we were building, we purchased the 3 bath vanities through the same cabinet company as our kitchen cabinets.

Our builder suggested the company we used for the tops. (I'll be honest - at that time I didn't even know that people put granite in their bathrooms.) We purchased our vanity tops at a local business called Beltway Custom Marble..... It's a "cultured/faux" marble that he actually makes right there. (Cultured marble, also referred to as cast polymer, is a plastic composite blend of high strength polyester resin and marble dust formed in a variety of molds to make a single piece article such as bathtubs, shower pans and vanity tops with a surface that resembles marble. Though it is a less expensive alternative to marble, it can have more tensile strength.

Because cultured marble is made with a molding process, it allows greater design flexibility than with stone. For instance, manufacturers of cultured marble can make a bathroom vanity with integrated bowl (or bowls). The manufacturing process encompasses several steps. One step uses a non-porous gelcoat on the counters and sinks which seals the product and prevents later mold and bacteria growth and staining.

The cultured marble industry is represented in many locations worldwide. The Kansas City, Missouri area is very prominent, with several large manufacturers: Leathers Cast Polymer, Bakers Marble, Complete Home Concepts, and The Onyx Collection.)

They also made our kitchen counter-tops. They're a "faux" granite with actual micra chips that catch the sunlight. It's a hard-surface counter-top like Corian.

We wanted to be able to have an island at the end of our counters and granite would be too heavy to use.

This is a close-up of the kitchen counter - the sink & counter are one piece.....

Here is the seating area that we wanted - which was the reason granite would be too heavy..... there is too much open area.....

This is the product that he used for the kitchen...... our color is 1006 - http://www.safascorp.com/cc_chip2.html#_self

Wallis, I love the look of it. I'll do a little investigating when it's time to replace some things around here. Also love your random tile.

I love the kitchen!!! I thought it was a showroom, really nice. I like those black handles too.

My cabinets are from 1988. They are OK - just a "track" quality. Yours look so nice. I have a list and it is a little ways down. The sad thing about being retired is that I have to ask myself DO I NEED OR WANT - oh, poo... I was thinking of replacing the cooktop (see black covers), but I don't think I like the corian, especially white.

Can't wait to see how the bathroom is going to come out.

Your kitchen is really pretty also...... Love your backsplash..... and your countertop.....

If you ever want to change your hardware.... this is where I purchased mine. My daughter-in-law just used them and she saved $120.00 - Yep, she was going to pay $120 more at another site. Her cost per knob was over $4.50 and this seller had them for $1.39 each.

Here's the link - I bought cabinet hardware, all of my door levers and towel racks from this seller. They've sold almost 26,000 items on eBay and they have 100% rating. Plus shipping is really cheap. http://stores.ebay.com/Cabinet-Hardware-Designs

Thanks Wallis104 - I try to keep everything like new. When I worked got chrome knobs at Home Depot. It is very costly to replace. When you start counting...WOW - I am going to check ebay. I have black sink and the top has black grey etc. Thanks again.

Yes I did.... you've got a great eye....

These are the knobs I used on the cabinet doors - http://cgi.ebay.com/Spiral-Cabinet-H...item4ced876981

And these are the pulls I used on the drawers - http://cgi.ebay.com/Cabinet-Hardware...item3359f63480

I like the elongated cabinet knobs also.... don't think they offered them when I purchased....
