Default what kind of window treatments

do you think of when you think about a 'zen' or peaceful sort of room with lots of windows? I'm starting to think about window treatments for the family room (the one I just painted blue/gray). I already have 2" plantation blinds in there, I just need something for a little interest/texture/pattern.

White or natural and kind of gauzy without being gauze. A fabric that would give you the same feel as a shoji screen but would move.

Yep. Something light and airy. Are you looking for something with a pattern or plain?

Light colored/creamy/white silky/silk, maybe?
But not shiny.

Grass blinds or a simple cotton panel, no pattern.

So you'd go with panels then I guess? I was thinking about valances but I think panels might be better, so that, like you say, they'll move.

Trying to find some gauze or gauzey lightweight panels. Most either have a pattern and/or they're polyester. Still looking. I don't have to find any right away for privacy reasons- I have 2" plantation blinds in there. So at least I can take my time and get just the right ones.

I looked at rugs while I was out today. The quandry about that is that I'd like to get a solid, neutral color rug, but all the ones that are in the right color range are waaaaaaay too light for a family with two active boys and a husband who forget to take their shoes off/put the lid on their no-spill cup/knock everything within a monkey's arms' reach over.

What I think I need is just a plain rug - one that looks like a bound 8' x 10' piece of carpeting. KWIM? In a creamy or beige or oatmeal color- but the only ones I saw today were WHITE or off white. No WAAAAAAAAAY could I do that, much as I'd love it.

Would you be willing to make them?

Dharma Trading Company has lots of fabric like that and it's pretty cheap, er, inexpensive.

These are just a few of them. They have silk and stuff, too.

Not a lot of "zen" images at Google, but found a couple. Not sure they'll be a lot of help, but here they are:

This first one is a bit too cluttered, IMO, to really be considered zen but that's what the designer is calling it.

This link will take you to a slide show of zen design. Most of it isn't what you are looking for, but there are a few pics of not-Asian rooms that show both grass blinds and/or simple straight panels.

Bee I'm reeeeeeeeally making an attempt NOT to have to make these. I was thinking since I wanted a neutral color and a simple panel that maybe I wouldn't have to. I'm still holding out hope. Thank you for the links though. I've saved them.

Nance that's a great site, thanks. I think I'm on the right track with the rug. Every picture on that site that had a rug to ground a conversation area (like I"m going to be using it for) was solid and neutral, just a bound carpet, basically. I just need to keep looking on that front, too. If all else fails I'll head up to Dalton - carpet capital of the world.

Actually Target had eXACTly what I wanted in terms of color and pile and bound edges, etc., BUT. The largest size they had was 5' x 7. I need the next size up. Of COURSE.

Woo, check this out. I was at Target today and they had this tango shag rug (must not be the same brand, d'oh!) in the same size (8x10) for 149.00!

Tie, I have a plain beige rug in my family room. I just went to a carpet store and found a carpet remnant that I liked. I think it was already bound, or if they did bind it for me, it wasn't expensive. It was extremely cheap - something like $125 for a 9 x 12. I've been very happy with it - it doesn't show any dirt which is important b/c I have four little kids, a large dog, a cat and a dh who isn't always the neatest guy in the world!

Ok, here's another option. Would you order them?

looking back at your pictures--which I must say, your wall color came out fabulous. Love the brown leather...which of course I also have so of course I love yours...

I think a white sheer panel would look nice but I could also see something more of natural color too, like a burlap or something similar.

Burlap might be nice, if it was flowy and zen-like.

That would be really pretty. Even something like a muslin would look nice too IMO. Something very organic looking.

Muslin would be good. I've made cafe curtains from that before (among a million other great uses of it) but I'm just still holding out for being able to buy them somewhere instead of making them. Muslin would be cheeeeeap!

What about matchstick roll up shades and take them all the way up to the molding.

You already have blinds, right. I was under the impression you didn't want to take those down. Did I misread?

Newp. They're staying. The curtain panels are just for an added layer.

For some reason they don't have them in white, just ivory. Might do ok.

Thanks! I just ordered them. Can't wait for them to get here. Now I need to go paint my curtain rod (aka copper pipe) and brackets (aka plant hanger brackets) ivory or white.
