Default Color explosion?

Noticing a trend on HGTV...at least on the 'house shopping shows' (what else do they show?)...big bright spacious houses with waaay too much color . A blue room, then an orange room, then a green room, then a red room, a bright yellow room...all jammmed in the same house. Not subtle color either!...I don't like it...A big airy house needs a splash of color..or maybe one good color in different varieties..but geez..it's a circus! Show after show..same thing. I think it really cheapens the look of the houses.

And yet, on that very same channel, all of the shows about selling your house talk about neutralizing colors.

Oggie, I've noticed the same contradictions
I do like color though, so I tend to not like the overly neutral homes as much. Just personal taste, neither right nor wrong.

I don't watch HGTV anymore but I have noticed in magazines and the Home & Living (real estate) section of our Sunday paper that the same thing seems to be the trend. It seems like it sort of started (or at least when I noticed it) with the Extreme Makeover trend of doing that - a 'theme' for every room and just as much bang for the buck as they can get. Shock value, at least the homes on TV. When they show it to you room by room you go "Oh woo, look at that!" but you're not seeing the whole house and how jarring all those colors are if there's no unification.

I agree though about it being a personal thing. Personally, I just don't care for it a whole lot.

When my daughter and her husband bought their house every wall was a different color....blue, green, yellow, orange. The foyer was orange and kitchen was purple. And I do mean bright colors. I have pictures of the first day in new house....Shelbie in Halloween costume with her father in the background painting every wall. lol My other son in law called it a "fun house".

Oh yes, color, color, and more color is definitely the trend for this year. And, lucky for Deco and Shoesie, mid-century modern is absolutely THE way to go.

Tuscan is out.
Chocolates, mochas, golds-- all out.

As always, my opinion is that when those 7 designers who make these determinations start paying our mortgages, then they can come in and completely redo our houses. Until then, live with what you like. Get rid of what you don't.

I usually do my "color" with things like slipcovers , pillows and accessories. I did the "red" thing in my living room for a few years, and grew so sick of it. I'm now into a more subtle neutral/subtle green......and it's so more relaxing for me.

It's a rare person I know that than decorate constantly because of the trends. I'd just prefer to update a few things occasionally. Who in the heck can justify a constant redo all of the time?

I am one of the few who really likes color like that and DD does also, but I will say that our colors harmonize. There is something to bring them all together.

DD has chocolate brown in her family room adjacent to her bright, limy kitchen and the entry way is khaki and continues down the hallway which makes it one wall of the family room. She has a rug in the family room with those colors in it.

My family room is a dark, cornflower blue and has been for 23 years and I still love it! DD's room is purple and red, DS's room is hunter green and red, our room is rose and other rooms are wallpaper in hunter green, ivory, rose, yellow and blue. I started with a piece of Spode china.

Default I did use color in my new kitchen

I don't really care what the realtors say on HGTV. I painted my kitchen the way I like it and will not worry what buyers will think when we do decide to sell. My kitchen has a Tuscan look. I didn't use all the expensive granite either. I do have the stainless appliances which to the HGTV shows is a plus.
I guess you do what you like in the home you live in. It's your home!

i noticed more color in the magazines but not quite that much. That does sound like a circus and i wouldn't feel comfortable with all that color not united and too bold.

I don't get HGTV these days because I don't have cable, so I've not seen the houses you are talking about but I have a different color in every room of my house. Would I have it like that if I sold it? Doubtful. But color, at least in my house, is who I am, my mother was the same way so I've never seen a problem with having different colored rooms.

Doing it for yourself is fine - why not? But when you're putting it up for sale you want to make it appealing to the most buyers, unless you have the luxury of time to wait on someone with the exact taste as yours. The wild colors you see on the House Hunters shows are these people.

I don't think any color/style is out. That's why you can go to any home improvement store right now and select a color from many of the thousands available! Whatever floats ya boat, NOT what some bozo designer on The Real Estate channel, I mean HGTV, says

I'm a big fan of color too. My kitchen is pretty neutral, aside from the curtains and accessories. Lots of color in the living room... colorful hallway. The rest of the house has a good bit of color. I won't be selling, so I won't be changing anything. Actually will be adding more before it's all over. Trying to think of a color for the "guest room to be".

IF I were going to sell... well, I think I'd see if there was any bad feedback before I put more time and money into paint. I still hate that most people nowadays expect a house to be exactly what they want moving in... If a place had good bones, is clean and decent, then paint should be an easy fix for a new owner. (*"*)

It absolutely should be, Bugs, but it's a new world out there. The standard-issue young home buyer today is a whole lot different than we were. Heck, most of us were happy if there wasn't a big hole in the roof and had indoor plumbing!

I really don't pay attention to the trends. I prefer to live in a house that I love and really don't care what others think. If someone looks at the house and doesn't like the colors then we can give them an allowance to paint. I like neutrals on all the walls though and bring my color in with art and accessories. That way I can change the look without repainting.
