Default Why do some preachers think they need to yell ?

We were in the Seattle area over the weekend & attended church Sunday morning in the Sumner area . For the sermon there was a scene projected on the wall . At one point the preacher slapped the wall two times ! Then later he yelled & made me jump ! I was talking to DH afterwards & he said don't worry we will probably not be back . That was a real turn off .

I don't know, but I can tell you I don't like it & I was raised in Southern Baptist Church's where the preacher done that. I didn't like going to church for that reason. Now I went to others churches where the preacher didn't do that & I enjoy it.

Our preacher doesn't yell . He speaks in a loving manner . Some times if he leads the singing he has a smile on his face too . I've never seen anyone sing while smiling .

To wake up the sleepers....

I don't like it either. I think there is other ways to get your point across...some of my favorite and most effective pastors were quiet, but they sure got you thinking.

I don't like all the yelling and drama. I prefer a pastor who speaks in a normal tone .

Coming from a Catholic background...there's no slapping walls in church and no yelling.

I don't like preachers who yell, either. I've been in services where that happened, and that's when they lose my attention. It just isn't necessary!

I thought it was so rude of him to slap the wall . He was trying to be "hip" & connect with the younger people but right then he lost my respect .

alpiner, when I was a kid my stepmother dragged me, my father, and stepbrother to a Southern Baptist church for quite a while and they yelled half the time. That was 60 years ago. My father and I came from a Catholic background and he could have cared less where he went to church. Fortunately, we eventually wound up at a Methodist church where they didn't find it necessary to yell at people.

I don't know who the yeller is supposed to be impressing with his mouth, his parishoners or God. There may be some people who need yelling at but there are probably more who don't. On the other had, I guess there are a lot of people who have no objections or if they do they're not going to say anything.

DH called our preacher today & told him he wanted have a serious conversation with him & was he ready ? The preacher must have said yes (I'm imagining he had a good laugh too ), then DH told him he didn't think his sermons were too long after listening to the preacher we listened to on Sunday & how that preacher was yelling . That preacher went a half hour more than our preacher . He made his point & kept on & on & on . People were getting up to leave or use the restroom !

Southern Baptists seem to be getting a bad rap here. lol I came from a long line of Baptists and just FYI....they don't all yell. Have you ever seen Dr. Charles Stanley on tv? He's Southern Baptist and from the south, too. Also Rev. Billy Graham who is Southern Baptist. No yelling. I don't think it's the denomination as much as the preacher's background. I understand there used to be a lot more "yelling" in Pentecostal churches than there are now. Perhaps it's something that was done years ago when there were no microphones and somehow the next generations thought it was something they should do. LOL!!

Impact, and it worked you're still talking about his sermon. You may never go back, you may have found him offensive, but you're still talking about him. He made an impression.

We went to an inter-denominational church when we lived in Central America. At one time the church had missionaries for preachers. One day we had a Pentecostal missionary and I told my husband. Watch and he will "pound the pulpit". Sure, enough...after three or four words, he pounded the pulpit to emphasize his words. My husband asked how I knew, and I told him that as a child I went to a Penacostal church and the preachers did that all the time....I was used to it. I believe it is the denomination not the preacher who yells and "pounds the pulpit".

They yell cause there is no substance to what they have to say.

I think sometimes to keep people awake. Our pastor is so soft spoken that I almost do fall asleep.

To get their point across
To scare you away from sin
To make sure the hearing impaired & the back pew sitters hear

I do not like yelling!

I prefer a preacher who speaks in a normal tone, but the choir can get a little bit happy if they want.

What I'd like to know is why do TV car dealers and rug salesmen yell?

winky, I wasn't referring to all Southern Baptists. As a matter of fact, this group was in Missouri. Where I usually see the screaming and pulpit beating is with some of the religious groups on t.v.

I love Charles Stanley. I think he's wise enough to know that he'll gather more parishoners with soft spoken (so to speak) words than yelling and beating the table.
