These Hairbands were made from used condoms and threads. That was so disgusting, I would not want anyone to use them!!

BEIJING (AFP) - Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday

In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdongprovince , China Daily newspaper said.

'These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well .. threatening the health of local people,' it said.

Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said.

'People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns,' the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying. A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 s en (three cents), much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity, the paper said.

A government official was quoted as saying recycling condoms was illegal.

In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer aimed at playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems.

How are they getting them turned back in in order to use them? Money back deposit like they do on drink bottles?

That is disgusting and true or not, one of the reasons I am tired of things being made in China.

Had to giggle at this name though!!

This is totally disgusting but I have a hard time believing that they are collecting used condoms for this purpose. It would just cost more to collect them than they are making. I suspect they are "seconds" which are shipped directly from the manufacturer.

Also, I don't think AIDS could be passed this way. It is not a stable virus and would not survive that long. Other STD's might survive though.

In any case, I'd freak if I unwrapped a hairband and saw that.

Perhaps they harvest them, from the sewage plants?

The workers, here, used to joke about how many condoms were floating, on certain days of the week.

I saw this sometime ago. I also have a hard time believing it.

If it's true I wonder how much the "collectors" get paid.
